About the Department

The technology faculty is specialised and innovative. Our aim is to deliver a relevant curriculum tailored as best as we can to the needs of our students. We are a diverse and far reaching faculty of subjects with staff that pride ourselves as flexible, friendly and focused on delivering active subjects. The faculty includes Design Technology, Food, Child Care, Business, Computing and Creative iMedia. Our schemes of learning are designed specifically to balance experience with a drive towards the best possible outcome at the end of Year 11.

What will your child learn in year seven?

In year 7 students will learn Computing, Food Technology and Design and Technology

In Computing - Computers are now part of everyday life and, for most of us, technology is essential to our lives, at home and at work. ‘Computational thinking’ is a skill that all pupils must learn if they are to be ready for the workplace and able to participate effectively in the digital world.

In Food Technology the course consists of a wide range of practical work and is supported through theory and interactive lessons. Students will be able to apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating.

In Design and Technology students will use their creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes out of wood and plastic, that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others' needs, wants and values.

How can learning progress throughout the classroom?

We understand and appreciate just how relevant being confident with technology is in this ever developing world and so there are opportunities beyond the classroom for extra-curricular activities abound. Whether students want to work on a specific subject area within the technology faculty, or simply wants to develop or master an interest or hobby, our extensive provision will encourage their passions and broaden their horizons. Activities take place daily at lunchtime and after-school.

What ambassador opportunities are available to your child?

In the technology faculty, our teachers inspire fascination for their subject. More importantly, they inspire students to take risks in their learning, to believe in themselves and to develop self-assurance to take ownership of their future. High expectations, together with an ethos of trust and respect, have created a truly effective and personalised learning environment where all students are nurtured, supported and challenged to exceed their personal best.

At every stage of the journey through the curriculum, we encourage our students to take pride in what they do. We recognise and celebrate Beautiful Work: work that emerges from thoughtfulness, perseverance, skill and collaboration. Students are trained and encouraged to be reflective, capable of reviewing, refining and developing their work to achieve outcomes that they may not previously have considered possible.
